Film Classification Committee denies banning telenovelas on TV from 1st May

Chairman of the Film Classification Committee Socrate Safo has debunked claims that soap operas or telenovelas would be taken off TV in Ghana.

There have been reports in the media space that the Classification Committee will, from May 1, take off all telenovelas from our screens.

According to the reports, telenovelas would be bannedbecause they portray the culture of other countries.

However, speaking in an interview with Kwasi Aboagye on Peace FM’s ‘Entertainment Review’, Socrate Safo revealed that the report was false.

He indicated that after a meeting with the Ghana Independent Broadcasting Association (GIBA), they accepted that all running telenovelas will continue to show because the TV stations have contracts with advertisers who run their adverts on the show.

Socrate added that after the running telenovela ends, the next one should be sent to the Classification Committee for review and censorship.
