Ghanaian actor and politician, John Dumelo has added his voice to the increment of taxes in the country due to the free water relief government gave Ghanaians during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In April 2020, President Akufo-Addo announced a free utility package for the vulnerable in the country to lessen the negative impact following a lockdown in Accra and Kumasi due to COVID-19.
In his 21st address to the nation, President Akufo-Addo stated again that,“With the continuing difficulties occasioned by the pandemic, I want to state that government intends to continue to support the most vulnerable in our society.
“Government will, thus, continue to pay the electricity bills for our nation’s one million active lifeline customers for the next three months, i.e. January, February and March.”
This week, Minister of Information KojoOppong Nkrumah announced that Ghanaians would have to pay for the free utilities they enjoyed during the lockdown period.
Speaking in an interview with Evans Mensah on PM Express on Joy Prime, Mr Nkrumah indicated that this is to help bring down the GH¢19 billion debt that was accumulated in that period.
Reacting to this, John Dumelo said it’s deception when you lie to people that you are giving them free things and just come back and say they’ll pay for it.
His post read: “…..when you lie to people that you giving them free things, only to come back and say “oh remember what I gave you”, it’s time to pay, that’s deception!
